“You’ll laugh, you’ll wonder, you might cry. Get thee to the Guru of Chai; you won’t regret it. Go drink chai from this cup of life.”
Waikato Times, Oct 2010
“The Guru of Chai works on so many levels there are times when the audience doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry…. it is the sheer brilliance of Rajan’s performance, and the humanity he brings to every character he creates, that holds this whirlwind of dramatic storytelling together. Rajan’s interaction not just with the audience but with his on-stage musician, David Ward, whose music and personality are an integral part of the evening’s enchantment, is a joy to behold.”
The NZ Listener, Sep 2010
Spend an unforgettable night in the theatre with a spiritual leader who will sell you a cup of tea, charm you with his infectious smile and take away all that is wrong with your life.
Indian Ink is one of Australasia’s most successful theatre companies, dedicated to infusing western theatrical traditions with Indian flavours to brew great stories which touch people of all cultures. Formed by award-winning actor Jacob Rajan and director Justin Lewis, the company has toured the world and won two Edinburgh Fringe First Awards.
Outrageously funny and heartbreakingly beautiful, The Guru of Chai is an intimate epic, with Rajan playing all characters, accompanied by talented musician David Ward. A poor chaiwallah’s (tea seller) life is changed forever when a young girl is abandoned at busy Bangalore railway station and brings the place to a standstill with the beauty of her singing. An honest, young policeman falls hopelessly in love but is rejected in favour of a disreputable poet. The contradictions of modern India with its i-Phones and ancient gods form the backdrop to this story about the dangers of keeping your soul locked in a cage.
With brilliant characterisations, music, shadow-puppets and a little magic, The Guru of Chai weaves an enlightening tale of loyalty, compassion and the quest for love in a ruthlessly dispassionate world.
