THE CHENNAI TAPES (INTO THE FIRE)

SRUTHI LAYA ENSEMBLE (INDIA)

GURU KAARAIKKUDI MANI (INDIA)

AUSTRALIAN ART ORCHESTRA (AUS)

“If there is to be an Australian music which has an identity of its own, the experiments of this orchestra will be the foundation on which others may have to build something monumental.”

The Indian Express, New Delhi

“In India we refer to music as ‘the divine’. We don’t know what it is and we are always searching for it, but music is always there. We are not really making innovations, we are discovering what already exists.”

Guru Kaaraikkudi Mani

South India’s rich Carnatic music tradition is interpreted by some of Australia’s leading jazz players in this dynamic fusion concert.

Australian Art Orchestrahas been collaborating with Guru Kaaraikkudi Mani since its first journey to India in 1996.  Mani Sir’s Sruthi Laya Ensemble has been the AAO’s regular guest with performances at the Adelaide Festival, Brisbane Biennial, Melbourne International Arts Festival as well as tours to Singapore and across Europe. This latest concert captures the exciting spirit of creative generosity and mutual respect found in the landmark recording the musicians made together in Chennai in 2008.

Established in 1994 by Paul Grabowsky (current Artistic Director of the Adelaide Festival), the Australian Art Orchestra is Australia’s premier contemporary music ensemble, mining the rich ground between jazz improvisation and classical traditions, and between western and non-western music. Guru Kaaraikkudi Mani is a Mridangam player and an innovator in the field of rhythm in South Indian classic music. A pioneer in bringing the Mridangam to the centre stage, he has performed with the likes of Paul Simon and inspired many cross-cultural music artists around the world.
