A MILLION EYES

ANANDAVALLI (AUS)

ANIL SRINIVASAN & SIKKIL GURUCHARAN (INDIA)

“It is unfortunately rare to see such truly mature dancers on Australian stages. The depth of understanding and interpretation was powerful and affecting.”

The Australian on Anandavalli

“Devastatingly beautiful. These are new musicians, this is the new music. They have started creating a new genre, serious, substantive.”

UK music legend John McLaughlin on Anil Srinivasan and Sikkil Gurucharn

Three unique artists join together for a captivating work of art, created especially for Parramasala.

Having retired from the stage in 2003, the world-renowned dancer and western Sydney resident Anandavalli makes a highly anticipated return to the spotlight for a very special and definitely final stage performance. Her collaborators are two of the most exciting musicians to have emerged from India in recent years, Anil Srinivasan and Sikkil Gurucharan.

With a career spanning over four decades, Anandavalli is a dancer, choreographer and teacher of the Bharatha Natyam and Kuchipudi traditions of classical Indian dance.  A child prodigy, she was taken under the wing of many of India’s most respected gurus, and embarked on extensive performance tours across Europe while still a young girl. Moving to Australia, Anandavalli continued her international performing schedule while establishing the Lingalayam Dance Academy in Sydney and later the all-female Lingalayam Dance Company.

Both from Chennai, the western trained classical pianist Anil Srinivasan and the stunning Carnatic vocalist Sikkil Gurucharan have recorded four landmark albums together. Srinivasan balances a career as both a musician and a leading educator in the United States. Evolving a new genre through the blending of western and Carnatic styling, his most acclaimed work has been with childhood friend Sikkil Gurucharan, the third generation of a family of well known Carnatic musicians. The groundbreaking duo were speakers at the recent inaugural TED India new ideas conference in Mysore.

Depicting the role of the woman across the ages, A Million Eyes revitalises classical Indian poetry as far back as the third century, teasing out its universal themes.
